Established in 1892 on the sweeping Norfolk coast at Brancaster, the Royal West Norfolk Golf Club is a distinguished links club whose “Royal” prefix was bestowed from its very founding. Set between the salt marshes and the North Sea, the course remains largely true to its original layout—designed by Horace Hutchinson—offering a pure, old-school golf experience where nature remains a prominent playing partner.

Sand dunes, exposed bunkers and the salt-laden wind combine to make the challenge special. Holes behave differently depending on tide and wind, and at times the course itself becomes island-like, accentuating its sense of place. The clubhouse, steeped in tradition, sits above a course that evokes calm and contemplation while demanding strategic accuracy rather than power.

As the club embarks on its next chapter, seeking a new Secretary who will help steward its heritage, support its membership and shape its future in an ever-changing coastal environment.

We are seeking a Candidates with the following skill set:

  • Strong people management skills - Building a team, finding congruency of purpose across departments, setting and maintaining levels of service.
  • Leadership - The Secretary leads the Club both internally and externally: representing the Club to visitors and external bodies; and conveying the needs of the membership to Club staff. The successful candidate will have a natural authority and strong inter-personal skills. Members, guests, neighbours and other external bodies will all feel welcomed and listened to by the Club.
  • Team Working - While leading the Club, the Secretary is required to work in collaborative fashion with the Club’s Officers and Staff and is able to call on domain-specific expertise in a range of areas from within the Club’s membership. An ability to thrive in this environment and to develop strong collaborative relationships is essential.
  • Attention to Detail - As a service organisation the role requires the Secretary to notice details, particularly around the Course and in the Clubhouse, such that levels of service can be maintained.
  • Initiative - The Secretary is the principal of the Club and will be expected to manage day to day activities without recourse to the Captain or Committee. This requires decision-making skills and initiative.
  • Commercial / Strategic Acumen - The Secretary will be expected to continuously assess opportunities to enhance the Club’s financial position through the improved exploitation of existing facilities and/or the adoption of new technologies (for example, the installation of solar panels). All such projects will need to carefully weighed against their likely impact on the Members’ enjoyment of the Club.
  • Conscientiousness - The Secretary and his team will have flexible working hours and fluctuating demands for service and access.
